Botanical Surveys at Various Preserves - Forest Preserve District of Kane County

In 2022, Woods To Wetlands, LLC (W2W) was retained by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County to update vegetation inventory data at Fitchie Creek, Tyler Creek, Burnidge, and Tekakwitha Woods Forest Preserves located in Kane County, Illinois. Three botanical surveys were completed at each forest preserve site during the growing season covering over 160 acres.

Using a timed meander method, various habitat types were surveyed including marsh, sedge meadow, remnant prairie, restored prairie, oak-hickory woodland, forested wetlands, and forested floodplain. During the botanical surveys, W2W ecologists and botanists documented all terrestrial and semi-aquatic plant species encountered. Plant species were identified using dichotomous keys provided in Flora of the Chicago Region (Wilhelm and Rericha, 2017) and The Illustrated Flora of Illinois series (Mohlenbrock, 1999-2019).

The project areas were also evaluated for the presence of threatened and endangered species. Upon completion of the botanical surveys, a technical report presenting the results and full species list for each site was prepared and provided to the Forest Preserve District of Kane County by the project deadline.
