Palatine Prairie Nature Preserve - Palatine Park District

The Palatine Prairie Nature Preserve is a remnant high-quality dry-mesic, mesic and wet-mesic prairie complex located adjacent to Union Pacific (UP) Railroad right-of-way (ROW) in the Village of Palatine, Illinois. Approximately 2.5 acres in size, this prairie is owned by the Palatine Park District and protected in perpetuity by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).

The Palatine Prairie Nature Preserve has never been plowed and some of the original plants and/or plant genetics from hundreds of years ago have persisted. Unfortunately, urban development surrounding the preserve led to the introduction of several non-native and invasive plant species into the remnant prairie including crown vetch (Securigera varia), Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense), common buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica), common reed (Phragmites australis), purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria), and reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea).

From 2019 through 2022, Woods to Wetlands, LLC (W2W) was retained by the Palatine Park District and provided stewardship services to eradicate the above-mentioned species. Specific herbicide products and careful spot spraying and hand-wicking methods were used to avoid damaging the surrounding high-quality native plants. Additionally, W2W successfully conducted a prescription burn in March 2022 in a designated portion of the remnant prairie. Ongoing stewardship work and another prescription burn is scheduled for 2023.
